 She appreciates how challenging the distances are. Flat tyres are a frequent issue due to the basic nature of the roads. APA staff continue to rely on public transport although there is a move afoot to secure the loan of a 4 wheel drive vehicle to transport materials.

Each year there is a sharing workshop the location of which rotates from Southern to northern and Wolega districs

They have 537 cases on their books and are achieving a 37% follow up rate. 8 patients have received income generating training which Amanuel delivers from an APA manual and this takes 4 days.

Eventually we hope to provide an off road motorbike to each of the 6 clinics to enable staff to reach patients that are too sick or too far from the clinic sites to reach them easily. Each bike costs about $1000

Claire is invited to speak at European Academy of Dermatovenereology the biggest European Dermatology event of the year with 12000 participants.  She delivered a talk on “Preventing cellulitis in tropical lymphoedemas; are there lessons to learn?” She focused on the successes of APA and other Podoconiosis NGOs in improving outcomes both in reducing cellulitis and improving quality of life in patients with swollen limbs


shoe workshops open near to the patients

So far 70 patients have benefited from custom shoes made by the recently trained shoe makers in the Soddo workshop.

Kutcha and Daramalo APA clinics. Both of these clinics are now participating in research. They are collecting data for  study measuring the impact of the washing techniques and the simple addition of glycerine (a cheap moisturising agent) to the wash water and its impact on skin barrier function

Coalition for Operational Research on NTDs (COR-NTD)

Podoconiosis asserted itself at this meeting in November 2014 in New Orleans. Key networks were reinforced and we highlighted the contribution the podoconiosis community trreatment programme can make to the management of other tropical lymphoedemas.

 There are 458 patients with Podoconosis registered at this site.  The patients should attend monthly, at Morica 61% of the patients are managing this leading to 14 visits each day.
